Join us for a musical “blast from the past” as the 74th Battle of Flowers® Band Festival celebrates “Battle of Flowers…Where Fiesta Began!”. This year’s event will highlight the proud heritage of Fiesta that began when a group of determined Texas women launched the first Battle of Flowers parade in 1891 to honor the heroes of the Alamo and commemorate the Battle of San Jacinto.
Students from more than 30 high school bands from San Antonio and surrounding areas will join forces to present an entertaining musical evening that is undoubtedly one of Fiesta’s most popular events. The celebration begins with a spectacular Herald Trumpet Fanfare, is followed by parades of high-energy marching bands with colorful flags, and includes special presentations by select area bands performing award-winning contest routines. In a spectacular grand finale, all 3,000 student musicians will perform a medley of songs celebrating music from Band Festivals of various decades against a backdrop of beautiful fireworks over Alamo Stadium!
The Battle of Flowers® Association also sponsors an annual competition for area high school students to design the cover for the Band Festival program. From among the entries, thirty drawings will be selected by a local judge, framed and displayed at a reception honoring the students and their art instructors on Sunday, March 25 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the San Antonio Garden Center. The top five winners will receive cash awards for their entries with the winning submission displayed on the cover of over 10,000 Band Festival programs.
The Band Festival is organized and sponsored by the Battle of Flowers® Association, which was chartered in 1914 with the mission of celebrating Texas history. The Band Festival first became a part of Fiesta in 1935 and has taken place at Alamo Stadium since 1941. An executive committee composed of area band directors and music educators works with Battle of Flowers® Association volunteers to plan the evening’s program.
